ISO Concept Database (ISO/CDB) online - Geneva

27. October 2009

Database for standardized terminology, graphical symbols and codes is live

“Develop innovative new products but do not reinvent the wheel“, that is what we want to achieve to be competitive. A huge step towards this goal was made
in international standardization.

On October 27th, 2009 the ISO Concept Database (ISO/CDB), a web-based data base for development, standardization and publication of standardized „concepts“
went online. The goal of the ISO/CDB is to standardize and publish common concepts on an international basis and make them available to users via a web-database.

ISO/CDB is based on eptos™ technology from Paradine, Vienna. Based on the eptos™ framework and the ISO software toolkit (for the user interface design, role and user
management, online voting, …) Paradine developed the ISO/CDB in cooperation with ISO. In the first stage Paradine will also host the ISO/CDB on behalf of
the ISO Central Secretariat, Geneva.

“The ISO/CDB allows users to search for concepts in the ISO collection of more than 18 000 published ISO standards” Reinhard Weissinger, project leader from the
ISO Central Secretariat, Geneva states. Initially, three important categories of concepts are covered: Terms and Definitions, Graphical Symbols and Codes
(country, currency, language and script). Standards under preparation, maintenance processes and additional concepts will be included in future versions of the ISO/CDB.
Concepts to be included can be terms and definitions, graphical symbols, product properties, units of measure, codes (language, country, currency, etc.), data
dictionaries of various types, and other.

Reinhard Pohn, managing director of Paradine explains the benefits of the ISO/CDB for the industry: “Companies can take over concepts from the ISO/CDB into
their internal systems or run online retrievals. The use of standardized concepts will reduce errors and misunderstanding in product development, it will shorten time to
market and reduce complexity of business processes.” Mr. Weissinger adds: “The availability of a comprehensive source of standardized concepts will of course also be
of big benefit to standardization work, as existing concepts can be found easily and reused in new standards.”

The ISO/CDB may be accessed at: http://cdb.iso.org. In this first release, users can access via the “Login as Guest” button (i.e., username and password not needed).
An online guided tour of the ISO/CDB and a “User Guide” are available at www.iso.org/e-guides (sub-folder: ISO Concept Database). Access to the ISO/CDB content, in
read-only mode is open to all and free of charge. Download of content will be charged on a item-by item basis or subscription basis.
